Compassion and Fatigue June 12 - 13 at St. Joe's University in Mandeville Hall. Compassion fatigue is known to professionals by many names - secondary victimization, secondary traumatic stress disorder, vicarious traumatization. It is, simply expressed, a by-product of care giving. The more intense and personal care given, the more vulnerable the care giver is to compassion fatigue. Professionals who work with severely traumatized individuals are at high risk. Family and friends of trauma victims are susceptible to traumatic stress, as well as the professionals who treat the victims. Police, fire fighters, EMT's, and other emergency workers report that they are most vulnerable to compassion fatigue when dealing with the pain of children. While empathy is a major resource for therapists in the assessment and treatment of trauma, it is also a key factor in the development of secondary trauma in therapists. This course involves hands-on solutions which can make a dramatic difference in the professional and private lives of those working with and around trauma. It is an intensive learning experience relating to all aspects of the care giver's life and the critical work they are being asked to do. It impacts the emotional, psychological, physical, social and spiritual well-being of the individual. It offers an understanding of how these areas are affected by the work they are doing and tools to prevent and treat any negative effects of this critical work. Click here to register.

Animal Emergencies in an Agricultural Environment – (LART) June 14-16 at Upper Bucks County Technical School. Emergencies involving farm animals can challenge even the most experienced emergency provider or animal handler. These animals are sometimes victims of a variety of different emergency situations including floods, building collapse, disease, highway incidents, fires, stuck in unusual places, to name just a few. In stressful situations, farm animals are very unpredictable and can pose significant danger to themselves, the general public and those individuals that are trying to help or contain them. Specialized training is needed to ensure animal safety and the safety to those responding. This course will provide the training necessary for County Animal Response Team (CART) members and emergency services first responders to be able to assist on the scene with emergencies and disasters involving farm animals. The training will include classroom instruction and detailed hands-on exercises that will allow the participants to practice their new knowledge and skills. There will be extensive hands-on exercises involving farm structures and live animals. Click here to register.
